One of my friends asked me if I had seen this “cool Halloween house” in Upper Saddle River? I knew there were houses and even streets that would go all-out with the decorations for Christmas but never knew there were a few around Bergen County that did this “extreme decorating” for Halloween too. I jumped in my car and headed over to Carlough Road in Upper Saddle River. This house was amazing I had to interview the owner and share it with all of you! After doing some research – I found two other great neighborhood homes that decorate for Halloween. Here’s the list of all three we found. Please comment or email us if you know of other spooky homes near you!
“The Halloween House” or “The Scary House” – 148 Carlough Road in Upper Saddle River
Halloween Backyard Maze – 124 Sheridan Terrace in Ridgewood (3:30pm to 9pm)
Clinton Place in Hackensack – Many houses on this street are in on the fun.

Playground Talk: How did this grow from just putting out a few decorations into a Halloween Extravaganza?
WE STARTED WITH A SPIDERWEB, A SCARE CROW AND THEN A SKELETON IN 2004-5 AND EVERY YEAR WE’VE JUST ADDED ON. WE WERE NEVER BIG WITH HALLOWEEN AND THE INSIDE OF OUR HOUSE IS NOT DECORATED IN ANY WAY, IT JUST MUSHROOMED OVER THE YEARS. PEOPLE ALWAYS ASK FOR MORE OR WHATS NEW?
Playground Talk: How long does this take to set up?
ABOUT 12-16 HOURS OVER 2 DAYS. LONGER THAN I WOULD LIKE BUT IT’S A GOOD WORK OUT.
Playground Talk: What are the hours you welcome visitors?
ANY TIME, BUT MOST PEOPLE STOP BETWEEN 6 P.M. – 9 P.M. IT LOOKS BETTER AT NIGHT WITH LIGHTS, SMOKE AND CREEPY MUSIC.
Playground Talk: What’s your favorite way to scare a visitor?
I CAN’T GIVE AWAY OUR SECRETS BUT YOU EITHER GET A SCARE OR A LAUGH. EITHER WAY PEOPLE ENJOY IT AND COME BACK FOR MORE, EVEN IF THEY ARE SPOOKED.
Playground Talk: How do you think your neighbors respond?
SOME OF THE NEIGHBORS TELL US THEY LOVE IT, I CAN’T SAY FOR SURE ALL OF OUR NEIGHBORS LOVE IT BUT NOBODY HAS COMPLAINED TO US ABOUT IT. WE ALSO GET MANY WALKERS, JOGGERS AND BIKERS AND EVERYONE TELLS US THEY CAN’T WAIT FOR THE HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS AND ENJOY IT.
Playground Talk: Do you have a favorite story?
LAST YEAR WE HAD A BIG OCTOBER FEST PARTY IN THE BACK YARD AND DURING THE PARTY A FEW LIMOS STOPPED AND ASKED IF THEY COULD TAKE WEDDING PICTURES BECAUSE THEY ALWAYS LOOK FORWARD TO THE DECOR. WE HAD THE ENTIRE WEDDING PARTY IN THEIR DRESSES AND TUXEDOS TAKING PICTURES IN OUR FRONT YARD! IT’S SOMETHING WE WILL ALL ALWAYS REMEMBER. / WE ALSO REALLY LOVE WHEN MY 71 YR OLD FATHER-IN-LAW SCARES PEOPLE WITH A MASK!
Playground Talk: The “tawk” on the playground is that you play movies on your barn…is that true?
SOMETIMES ON THE WEEKENDS (MOSLY FRIDAY AND OR SATURDAY NIGHT) I WILL PROJECT HALLOWEEN ANIMATIONS ON OUR BARN IN THE BACKYARD. MOST PEOPLE PULL TO THE TOP OF THE DRIVEWAY, LOOK DOWN AND CHECK IT OUT FOR A FEW MINUTES. RECENTLY WE WATCHED TOY STORY ON THE BARN WITH THE KIDS AND THEIR FRIENDS AND THEY PUT DOWN BLANKETS AND WERE WATCHING THE MOVIE IN THE YARD.
Playground Talk: In a few sentences can you describe what your Halloween House offers the community?
WHEN I WAS CHILD MY DENTIST IN MIDLAND PARK USED TO HAVE A FEW HALLOWEEN PROPS AND WOULD TALK OVER A MICROPHONE OR SPEAKER TO THE CHILDREN WHEN WE WOULD TRICK OR TREAT. ALTHOUGH IT WAS ONLY THREE OR FOUR PROPS, I ALWAYS REMEMBER IT BEING THE BEST HOUSE ON HALLOWEEN. I DON’T SEE TOO MANY HOUSES ANYMORE DECORATED LIKE THAT AND DEFINITELY NOT AS OVERBOARD AS OURS. WE HOPE TO LEAVE SOME GOOD FUN AND LASTING MEMORIES FOR ALL AGES.
Playground Talk: Anything else you’d like to add?
COME ON DOWN TO THE SCARY HOUSE IF YOU DARE……
*Note – This post was created in 2013. The family contacted us this year and shared this updated photo. Very neat devil addition to the top of the house.
