Last week the kiddies and I had the opportunity to check out an art class at Drawing Room – Fine Art & Sculpture Studio in Midland Park. In case you don’t know, The Drawing Room is a Fine Art & Sculpture Studio run by six professional artists who give their students “an in-depth, age appropriate foundation in the principals and techniques of the creative process in an environment that is warm, educational and fun. Our programs encourage students to think outside the box, grow in creativity, and express themselves confidently.”

Their approach is to expose students to different time periods, cultures, and use a multimedia style of instruction (iPads, for example). Their students range from pre-schoolers to senior citizens – a true measure of how art has universal appeal.

I was immediately impressed with the sunny, light-filled rooms and the array of artwork on display. There are some talented students here!

We joined a class, the Budding Artist class (for 4 to 6 year-olds), led by instructor Kat Rutler, where half the kids were working on projects they had made in the previous class (painting them) and the other half were working on new pieces from a fresh lump of clay.

This class’s goal is to  “expand kids’ creativity through different theme-based projects while working with great art materials. Students will express themselves through a wide variety of media as they explore drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, and more.”

Kat showed us how to break off a piece of clay using a wire and then the kids worked their pieces to get them ready for shaping. We first made them into balls to make pinch pots.

Then, the kids hollowed out the insides and smoothed out the sides so there were no air bubbles. This could cause the piece to break when it’s fired up.

We were not able to bake our pieces in this session but here are the other kids who were working on their finished products:

Kat was a great instructor with kids–very patient and supportive. We had a great time at our art class and can’t wait to try another one!

These are the kinds of classes they offer (Provided by the Drawing Room):
